Years after the 2020 shooting incident, Megan Thee Stallion continues to face challenges stemming from that night even as Tory Lanez serves his sentence.
Outside of civil court, Megan is pursuing a defamation lawsuit against blogger Milagro Gramz for allegedly spreading false information about the case.
On the criminal side, Tory Lanez recently attempted to appeal his conviction and ten year prison sentence but the California Court of Appeal denied it. His conviction included three felony counts. Assault with a semiautomatic firearm. Having a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle. And discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The appeals court also upheld the judge’s use of aggravating factors at sentencing. Tory’s legal team did not dispute three of the four aggravating factors including the court’s finding that his post shooting actions made the situation worse.
Instead, his lawyers challenged whether Megan qualified as a vulnerable victim under California law. That designation can increase a defendant’s sentence. The appeal referenced a statement from Kelsey Harris who told prosecutors she saw Tory reach toward the car’s center console after allegedly threatening Megan. Tory’s team argued that Megan had the ability to run or duck once she saw a gun being pointed at her which they claimed meant she was not vulnerable.
The appellate judges rejected that argument. They said the trial court’s finding was supported by the evidence and noted that Tory’s actions after the shooting also contributed to the sentence he received.
Tory was convicted in December 2022 and sentenced in 2023. With a ten year sentence including time served he is expected to complete it around 2032 or sooner depending on credits. No official release date has been confirmed.
Meanwhile Megan continues to push forward with her defamation lawsuit as she works to hold those spreading falsehoods accountable.
