The former actress announced on Friday that she’d asked the 69-year-old Royal if he’d do her the honor. Markle’s biological father #ThomasMarkle was originally supposed to carry out the duty. Unfortunately, Markle confirmed on Thursday that he would no longer be attending the wedding.

“Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St George’s Chapel on her Wedding Day,” the palace statement said. “The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms. Markle to The Royal Family in this way.”

Reports show that “It was Meghan’s wish and she is grateful for the Prince of Wales to be doing it,” a royal source tells PEOPLE. The decision to ask Prince Charles was made in less than 24 hours after she found out her father wouldn’t be attending. Her father, Thomas, decided to step down after a successful heart surgery, as well as afrer it was revealed that he was working with a paparazzi agency to stage several photo shoots.
