Miami Cold Case Solved: Fugitive Caught in Kenya 15 Years After Deadly Shooting

Nicolas Soares

Fifteen years after a deadly shooting outside a Miami home, police say they’ve finally captured the man they believe was the triggerman. Nicolas Soares, 34, was arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, and extradited to Miami to face charges in the 2010 killing of Herbert Caniza.

Investigators say Caniza answered his front door expecting an acquaintance, but instead met a man pointing a gun. He was shot in the chest and later died at the hospital. Detectives discovered a shirt at the scene that read “If you see the police, warn a brother,” which was tied together to form a mask.

According to police reports, Soares’ former roommate revealed that Soares had confessed his plan to rob Caniza on the day of the shooting. Authorities say guns and drugs were found in the victim’s home. Another witness described Soares as acting “paranoid and anxious” afterward and later admitting to being present during the killing.

Detectives learned that Soares fled the country with help from his mother, who arranged for him to travel to Brazil shortly after the shooting. Years later, authorities tracked him down in Kenya after extensive cooperation between Miami police and international agencies.

Soares appeared in court on Thursday, where he was denied bond and assigned a public defender.
