Michael Jordan’s 1992 “Dream Team” Jacket Up For Auction

Sotheby’s will present The Dream Team Part I, a special single lot auction for Michael Jordan’s iconic 1992 Summer Olympics ‘Dream Team’ Gold Medal Ceremony Reebok jacket.

This jacket may be the most important ‘Dream Team’ item publicly offered and perhaps the most controversial piece from Jordan’s career.

Jordan wore the jacket when he accepted the Gold Medal for the team’s win and his leadership of the 1992 ‘Dream Team’ in Barcelona. At the time, Jordan was against wearing the Reebok jacket because of his loyalty and partnership with Nike.

The red, white, and blue jacket has been in the possession of Brian McIntyre for more than three decades now. But he feels it’s time for a new owner.

“I’ve enjoyed it, and it’s just the right time to do this,” McIntyre said. “And it’s easier to do this than it is to leave things for my kids.” When Jordan came off the Olympic stand, he took off the jacket and tossed it aside, and gifted it to McIntyre, who was the NBA’s Public Relations director.

Sotheby’s estimates that the item could fetch anywhere from $1 million to $3 million, The Canadian Press reported.

“This jacket is many things. It’s a symbol of Michael Jordan’s Gold Medal performance as part of arguably the greatest basketball team ever assembled, ‘The Dream Team.’ It represents a milestone in terms of how the National Basketball Association was able to build its audience on the global stage, and finally, this jacket is a representation of Michael’s loyalty to Nike, the company that believed in him from the very inception of his professional career, and is still such an important part of his life,” Sotheby’s website reads.

The jacket is said to be in its original condition, with safety pins still covering the Reebok logo.

The 1992 Dream Team was dominant, with a perfect eight wins and 0 losses in its Olympic effort. It was also the first year professional athletes could compete in the games. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, and Scottie Pippen and others were on the 1992 team.
