Major League Baseball is tightening up how fans can bet on games following concerns about pitch-fixing.
The league announced Monday that it’s placing new restrictions on pitch-level bets, also known as “micro-bets,” which allow fans to wager on things like whether a pitch will be a ball or a strike. These bets will now be capped at $200 and banned from being included in parlay bets. The rules go into effect immediately and cover over 98 percent of the U.S. betting market.
The move comes after reports that two pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Luis L. Ortiz, were indicted for allegedly helping gamblers win bets by intentionally throwing certain pitches for balls. Both pitched for the Cleveland Guardians in 2023.
“Since the Supreme Court decision opened the door to legalized sports betting, Major League Baseball has continuously worked… to uphold our most important priority: protecting the integrity of our games for the fans,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who has pushed for changes after the allegations involving Guardians players, praised the decision.
“By limiting the ability to place large wagers on micro-prop bets, Major League Baseball is taking affirmative steps to protect the integrity of the game,” DeWine said.
Christian Genetski, president of FanDuel, also supported the change, saying it shows a strong commitment to keeping the games fair.
