The husband of Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen is now facing a premeditated murder charge after she was found dead inside her home, turning a quiet South Florida neighborhood into an active crime scene overnight.
Authorities say 40-year-old Stephen Bowen was taken into custody and later booked on charges of first-degree premeditated murder and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. According to police, Nancy was discovered on Wednesday morning at her residence on Northwest 127th Avenue after officials conducted a well-being check.
Coral Springs Police Chief Brad Mock confirmed the case is being investigated as a domestic violence incident, although he did not release the exact cause of death. However, several outlets have reported that Nancy was shot. Still, Mock also made it clear there are no additional suspects and no ongoing threat to the public.
By Thursday morning, Stephen appeared in bond court, where a judge ruled there was probable cause and ordered him held without bond.
“I have reviewed the probable cause affidavit. The court does find probable cause for the charges,” the judge said.
An attorney speaking on his behalf invoked his right to remain silent.
While the investigation unfolds, the loss is hitting beyond the courtroom. Nancy’s family shared, “While many knew her as a leader and advocate, we knew her as a sister, a daughter, and a friend whose warmth and laughter filled every room.”
Local leaders are also mourning. Tamarac Vice Mayor Marlon Bolton said, “Every time you talked with Nancy, it’s all about how can I help the next person.”
Elected in 2020 and reelected in 2024, Nancy made history as the first Black and Haitian American woman commissioner in Coral Springs, leaving behind a legacy rooted in service and community impact. Tragically, Nancy’s younger brother, Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, took his own life in December after grappling with years of mental health issues stemming from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting.
