Naomi Osaka Will Tackle Pressure of Attention in Upcoming Netflix Doc

Naomi Osaka is getting candid about the pressures of being a tennis star in her forthcoming Netflix docu-series.

The 23-year-old opens up about how she was expected to be perfect but no longer cares how people may see her.

“I always have this pressure to maintain this ‘sweetpea image.’ But now, I don’t care what anyone has to say,” she proclaims in the trailer.

The doc will follow Osaka during her two years as an international superstar and explore the overwhelming spotlight that has been placed on her since defeating her idol Serena Williams at the 2018 U.S. Open.

“I think the amount of attention that I get is kind of ridiculous,” Osaka says in the doc.

Osaka will also take viewers on an inside look at what it is like to be one of the world’s most prominent athletes in a physically taxing sport, her struggles with her identity, as well as her activism work.

“For so long, I’ve tied winning to my worth as a person,” she reflects. “To anyone that would know me, they’d know me as a tennis player. So like, what am I if I’m not a good tennis player?”

Directed by Garrett Bradley, the three-part series will debut exclusively on Netflix on July 16th.

“More than anything, I’d hope people can feel the power of empathy and to feel encouraged to take chances in life, perhaps especially in moments where the stakes can feel impossibly high,” Bradley said of the doc in a press release.
