Najhim Luke, 22, was arrested on Monday for the murder of newly graduated high school senior Brandon Hendricks, according to NY Post.
Hendricks had a bright road ahead of him. The point-guard basketball player planned to go to St. John’s University this fall to play ball. The teen’s life was snatched away from him when he was gunned down right before midnight on June 28.
Luke fatally shot Hendricks in the neck one week after the future basketball star graduated from James Monroe High School.
Hendricks’ death left his city confused and in despair. The teen’s coach said he is confident that the bullets that took Hendrick’s life were not meant for him. According to ABC 7, police said Hendrick was an innocent bystander.
“He wasn’t that kind of a kid,” his coach said.
His coach described him as a “remarkable” and “intelligent” athlete.
Hendrick’s mother, Eve Hendricks, made a Facebook post, following her son’s death.
“He was my perfect son, and I am very VERY PROUD to be his mother, and I would do it all over again, and I’ll do anything for him. There’s a hole in my heart that can’t be sealed or filled. I’m confused, and I am in disbelief. I just don’t know what to say.”
Eve recently told The Post that she has no forgiveness for the person that took her son’s life away.
“I’ll never, ever forgive that person as long as I live because that person took away my world,” she said. “That person shattered my heart.”
