Swiss chocolate giant Nestlé is dealing with a real-life candy caper after a massive shipment of Kit Kat bars vanished somewhere between Italy and Poland.
Authorities say the stolen load totaled roughly 12 tons, equal to about 413,793 Kit Kat bars, which disappeared shortly after leaving a production facility in Italy. The shipment was intended for distribution across multiple European markets, but it never made it to its destination. As of Friday, the company confirmed that “the vehicle and its load are still nowhere to be found.”
The scale of the theft has raised concerns across the supply chain, especially as cargo theft continues to hit food and retail companies across Europe. While chocolate might seem like an unusual target, high-volume, easily resold goods like candy can quickly move through unofficial channels without drawing much attention.
Nestlé says it is prepared if the stolen products resurface. Each bar carries a traceable batch code, allowing retailers, wholesalers, and even customers to verify whether a product is part of the missing shipment. If flagged, the company can take steps to track and report the goods.
The brand addressed the situation with a mix of humor and caution, stating, “Whilst we appreciate the criminals’ exceptional taste, the fact remains that cargo theft is an escalating issue for businesses of all sizes.”
The company added, “With more sophisticated schemes being deployed on a regular basis, we have chosen to go public with our own experience in the hope that it raises awareness of an increasingly common criminal trend.”
For now, the missing Kit Kats remain off the grid.
