Four Injured, One Killed at New Orleans Mardi Gras Parade Shooting

A man was arrested for shooting five and killing one during a Sunday Mardi Gras Parade in New Orleans.

On Monday, police identified the shooter as 21-year-old Mansour Mbodj.

Mdodj was apprehended “within moments” before the shooting around 9:30 p.m., according to interim police chief Michelle Woodfork. He was booked with second-degree murder, New Orleans police announced Monday.

Police reported one of those injured was a child.  They claimed officers heard gunshots ring out while on patrol at the parade and found five victims.

The individuals hit by gunfire have not been identified by name.  Emergency medical services responded quickly to the shooting, and all five were transported to a nearby hospital.

According to the police chief,  four of the victims who suffered injuries had been released from the hospital by Monday.  The injured were identified as a 4-year-old girl, an 18-year-old man, a 22-year-old woman, and a 24-year-old woman.

The fifth victim was a deceased male between 15 and 18.  Police have not yet identified him.
On Sunday, NOPD Chief Deputy Superintendent Hans Ganthier told CBS New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV that officers “were quickly able to apprehend the suspect we believe responsible for this” and that two guns were recovered. Mbodj was detained Sunday for illegally carrying a weapon and later rebooked on an additional count of second-degree murder.

“This is not something we wanted to see,” said Ganthier. “We wanted this to be a safe Mardi Gras.”

WWL reported that the parade was temporarily paused but then allowed to continue.

Since the beginning of Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans, Woodfork said, officers have confiscated weapons along parade routes across several districts.
