Pras Michel, beloved member of the Fugees, is recovering from emergency colon cancer surgery, delaying his scheduled sentencing in a high-profile federal case.
The sentencing, originally set for last month, was postponed after the rapper required urgent surgery to remove cancer from his colon. Erica Dumas, a spokesperson for Michel’s legal team, confirmed the news in a statement exclusively shared with Complex.
“Pras was unable to attend his scheduled sentencing hearing on Friday due to emergency medical surgery to remove cancer from his colon,” said Dumas. “We wish him a complete and speedy recovery as he navigates both his legal matters and his health journey.”
Michel’s cancer diagnosis had not been publicly disclosed prior to this update. A new sentencing date has been tentatively set for October 3rd, just before his 53rd birthday. However, further delays are possible if his condition worsens.
In April 2023, Michel was convicted on 10 federal charges tied to an international conspiracy involving foreign political donations and alleged lobbying efforts. The charges stem from accusations that Michel helped illegally funnel $865,000 into Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign and later worked to influence the Trump administration to drop investigations related to Malaysian financier Jho Low.
Michel faces up to 20 years in prison but remains free on bond pending an appeal. His legal team has raised concerns about the competency of his previous defense counsel, citing the use of artificial intelligence in preparing closing arguments as part of their appeal strategy.
