A pregnant woman was shot three times when a shootout broke out in Southeast Washington D.C. on Wednesday.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, over 100 shots were fired between several cars in the 2600 block of Birney Place at around 3:00 p.m. When authorities arrived, they located a pregnant woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was initially listed in critical condition. As of Thursday, reports have indicated that she is now in stable condition at a local hospital. Though police now suspect that the brazen attack was planned, they believe the woman was an innocent bystander and was not the target.
The victim told authorities that she was the property manager where the gunfire occurred and that she was pregnant. At this time, the condition of her unborn child remains unknown.
Detectives found about 90 shell casings at the scene. MPD announced they’d also located both cars involved in the shooting near the 3100 block of Bruce Place in Southeast. Both vehicles were confirmed stolen and had been set on fire.
Later Wednesday night, a separate shooting just 2.5 miles south left one man dead and two wounded. Like the earlier shooting, this one also let off at least 90 bullets. Police do not believe the incidents are related but are still investigating.
