Donald Trump is urging two of America’s most storied sports franchises to return to their old names, stirring national conversation over tradition versus cultural sensitivity.
In a social media post, Trump referred to the Washington Commanders as the “Washington Whatever’s” and demanded that the team immediately change its name back to the Washington Redskins. He also called for Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Guardians, formerly the Cleveland Indians, to restore their original name, calling the current changes a removal of history and pride.
According to Trump, there is a “big clamoring” from fans and “great Indian people, in massive numbers” who want the historic names back, arguing that these titles represent heritage and legacy, not disrespect. Trump added that the cultural climate is “different now” compared to when the names were dropped, calling on team owners to “get it done.”
Both franchises originally dropped their names after backlash from Indigenous groups and activists, who argued that the terms and imagery were offensive. Washington rebranded as the Commanders in 2022, while Cleveland became the Guardians in 2021, decisions made to align with cultural awareness efforts.
