The Florida Department of Transportation has painted over a rainbow crosswalk in Orlando that was created to honor the 49 lives lost in the 2016 Pulse nightclub tragedy.
The memorial crosswalk, located near the site of the nightclub, was more than just paint on the street. It was a tribute to the victims of one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history and a symbol of Orlando’s commitment to the LGBTQ+ community.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer expressed heartbreak over its removal, calling the act both devastating and unnecessary. He emphasized that the crosswalk not only provided pedestrian safety but also stood as a reminder of the lives cut short during the attack.

Governor Ron DeSantis defended the decision, stating that Florida roads should not be used for “political purposes.”

The move has sparked outrage across social media, with many viewing it as a hostile gesture against the LGBTQ+ community and the city of Orlando’s efforts to remember the Pulse victims.
