Russell Wilson‘s time with the Denver Broncos has been a rollercoaster since the arrival of head coach Sean Payton. On Monday, the team announced Wilson’s release, which many had anticipated.
“On behalf of the Broncos, we thank Russell for his contributions and dedication to our team and community while wishing him the best as he continues his career,” general manager George Paton and coach Sean Payton said in a joint statement.”
“As we move forward, we are focused on building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond. We are excited to improve this offseason and will have the flexibility to get better through the draft and free agency.”
The Denver Broncos will be taking on over $85 million in dead cap salary for releasing Wilson, but they will avoid a $37 million guaranteed trigger for the 2025 season.
Robert Griffin III went on ESPN’s Get Up and took up for Wilson after what he felt was mistreatment towards the NC State Alum.
“When you bring in a quarterback of that caliber and you cater it to him, you have to fully cater it to him. Not put him in an offense with a first-time head coach, a first-time play-caller, a first-time GM and a young team and expect him to make chicken out of a chicken shit!”
Wilson will garner some interest in the NFL market. However, it’s believed his new home will be announced after the NFL Draft at the end of April.
