As the Salt Lake City community continues to process the loss of Robert Cosby Jr., new police documents have shed light on the legal drama hanging over his final days.
In January 2026, just weeks before his untimely death, authorities sat down with his mother, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Mary Cosby, to discuss allegations of domestic turbulence involving his ex-wife, Alexiana Smokoff.
The sit down, which took place on Jan. 9, saw the Bravo star offering a different perspective on her son’s marriage than what was being reported to dispatchers. The reality star told officers she didn’t see her late son and his wife fight much. Cosby acknowledged that the pair got into verbal arguments, but said she was not privy to any physical interactions.
Mary remained firm in her stance that her son did not have a history of aggression. Authorities say the Church leader denied her son was violent and shared that she did not raise him that way. While she maintained a peaceful image of their home life, Cosby claimed she did not see any injuries on either party while they were under her roof. However, one time Robert Jr. and another person jumped off a balcony while high.
These statements came in response to a much darker account provided by Smokoff. Back in November 2025, she had contacted law enforcement to report a confrontation from the previous spring. Smokoff claimed that Robert Jr., who was incarcerated at the time of the report, became enraged after she threw his drugs in the toilet six months earlier “because she was tired of his drug use.”
The start of 2026 proved to be a volatile time for the 23-year-old. In the weeks leading up to Robert Jr.’s tragic death, the young adult was charged with domestic violence and had a warrant out for his arrest.
Even after a brief stint behind bars for a protective order violation, the legal system attempted to steer him toward recovery. As part of his Feb. 3 release, he was ordered to complete 75 hours of community service and complete substance abuse and anger management classes during his 24 months of probation.
Tragically, the pressure of his pending felony assault charges and his battle with addiction reached a breaking point shortly after.
On Feb. 23, the investigation into his life took a somber turn. Robert Jr. was found dead after officers “responded to an overdose call that turned into a death investigation.”
