Ruth’s Chris Steak House is reminding guests that showing up for a steak dinner means dressing the part.
The upscale restaurant chain recently posted a notice on its website reiterating its “business casual” dress code policy, making it clear that hats are not permitted inside dining rooms. According to the message, guests wearing hats, including baseball caps, may be asked to remove them or be directed to dine in the bar or lounge area instead.
“Business casual — proper attire required please,” the notice reads.

The policy also outlines clothing that is not permitted in the dining room. According to the restaurant’s guidelines, gym wear, pool attire, tank tops, clothing with offensive graphics or language, revealing outfits, and exposed undergarments are not allowed during the dining experience.
While it’s unknown what prompted the company to provide this updated dress code reminder, guests are encouraged to read it before heading to their nearest Ruth’s Chris. The reminder also arrives as the steakhouse brand continues operating under Darden Restaurants. In 2023, the restaurant group acquired Ruth’s Chris’ parent company in a deal valued at approximately $715 million.
“Ruth’s Chris is a strong and distinctive brand in the fine dining segment with an impressive history of delivering elevated dining experiences to their loyal guests,” Darden CEO Rick Cardenas said when the acquisition was announced.
The brand traces its roots back to 1927, when the original Chris Steak House opened in New Orleans. In 1965, entrepreneur Ruth Fertel purchased the restaurant and renamed it Ruth’s Chris Steak House.
Today, the steakhouse operates locations around the world.
