Senate Republicans Block Epstein File Release in Narrow Vote

The fight over Jeffrey Epstein’s case files reached a boiling point in Washington yesterday. On Wednesday, Senate Republicans narrowly defeated a Democratic-led push to add language to Congress’ annual defense authorization bill that would have required the Justice Department to release all files tied to Epstein’s sex trafficking investigation.

The measure failed in a 51–49 vote. Democrats were joined by Republican Senators Josh Hawley (Missouri) and Rand Paul (Kentucky), but the effort still fell short.

Democrats have been pressing for months to make the Epstein files public, arguing that the American people deserve transparency. The move has put Republicans in a tight spot, since many within their base also want the files released. Trump once suggested he was open to a full release but has recently dismissed the effort as a “Democrat hoax.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune argued that the Justice Department has already released a large amount of material, saying he trusts officials to balance transparency with protecting victims’ rights. Still, victims of Epstein’s abuse and many Americans say what has been made public so far is nowhere near enough.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer blasted Republicans for blocking the amendment, accusing them of abandoning their own calls for accountability. “Why won’t you vote yes?” he asked during a floor speech.

The push for disclosure isn’t going away. In the House, Democrats are closing in on enough support to force a separate vote that could compel the Justice Department to release the remaining files. A discharge petition, essentially a way to bypass House leadership, has four Republican signers and is now just one name short of triggering a potential floor vote.

The Epstein case continues to haunt Washington more than four years after Epstein died in jail while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. For victims and advocates, releasing the files is about transparency, accountability, and answering long-standing questions about who was involved.
