When it comes to motherhood, many women make the job look like a piece of cake. But in reality, even for one of the best athletes in the world, bearing and raising children comes with many challenges.

During a recent women’s conference in Philadelphia, Serena Williams opened up about the insecurities she’s had as a mother.

“I always have these insecurities that I’m not good enough as a mom,” Williams said according to The Philly Voice. “We all go through these different emotions that we all don’t feel comfortable talking about. But I think we should.”

Williams also spoke about the topic of black women being placed at a higher risk for health issues during and after childbirth due to a lack of proper care by physicians.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“I did some research and I was alarmed that our black mothers are not being taken care of. It’s in this country that is supposed to be so technologically advanced. Why are we treating out mothers like this?” Adding, “It’s really unacceptable…I feel like if I can help save lives—that’s one of the best things that you can do.”
