Six Flags America, a family favorite in Bowie, Maryland, officially closed its doors for good over the weekend after entertaining generations for 50 years.
Originally opened in 1974 as The Wildlife Preserve, the location evolved into a Six Flags property in 1999. The park hosted its final guests on Sunday, November 2, offering one last round of rides and memories before locking its gates.
“Thank you, Six Flags America fans, for 50 years of family fun. We will always cherish the memories made together,” the park posted on social media.
The park, along with its water park, Hurricane Harbor, was home to more than 100 rides and attractions. But the closure is part of a larger corporate strategy to restructure and reduce debt.
“As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plans,” said CEO Richard A. Zimmerman. “After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment.”
The park employed around 70 full-time staff. According to a press release, severance and support will be offered to eligible employees.
The company has not yet announced the future of the rides or what will become of the property.
