The social media addiction trial is officially underway, and Mark Zuckerberg is now testifying in a Los Angeles courtroom.

For the first time, the Meta CEO is answering questions in front of a jury over claims that Instagram was designed in ways that hooked young users and worsened their mental health. The case centers on a now 20-year-old plaintiff identified in court documents as KGM, who says she began using Instagram and YouTube as a child and developed compulsive use patterns that deepened her depression and suicidal thoughts.

This social media addiction trial could reshape how courts treat tech companies.

According to court filings, the plaintiff’s legal team argues that features like infinite scroll, push notifications, and algorithm-driven recommendations were intentionally built to keep young users engaged for as long as possible. They claim those design choices function like a defective product, not just a neutral platform.

Meta denies the allegations. Company attorneys argue that social media platforms are tools for communication and expression, and that users choose how they engage. They also point to existing federal protections that generally shield tech companies from liability over user-generated content.

The focus is not just on what people post. It is on how the product itself works. Jurors are being asked to consider whether the architecture of the platforms contributed to addictive behavior in minors. That question lands heavy at a time when parents across the country are raising concerns about screen time, teen anxiety, and the pressure of online validation.

Zuckerberg’s testimony is expected to address what Meta knew about teen mental health research and what steps the company took to address potential harms. Internal documents about youth engagement and safety measures are also part of the evidence being examined.
If the jury sides with the plaintiff, the impact could stretch far beyond this one courtroom. Thousands of similar lawsuits have been filed nationwide, all watching how this social media addiction trial plays out.

One verdict could open the floodgates.
