Spotify Launches New Crackdown on Misleading AI Music to Safeguard Real Artists and Fans

Spotify is taking a strong stand against AI-generated music that misleads listeners or exploits artists.

As artificial intelligence becomes more common in music production, concerns about fraudulent content and unclear labeling have grown among creators and fans alike.

On September 25, the platform announced a series of measures aimed at curbing harmful AI practices while highlighting the positive potential of technology in music creation. Spotify emphasized that AI can unlock exciting opportunities for both artists and listeners, but it also warned that it can be misused to flood the platform with low-quality or deceptive content.

“At its best, AI is unlocking incredible new ways for artists to create music and for listeners to discover it,” a Spotify representative wrote in the company’s For the Record blog. “At its worst, AI can be used by bad actors and content farms to confuse or deceive listeners, push ‘slop’ into the ecosystem, and interfere with authentic artists working to build their careers. That kind of harmful AI content degrades the user experience for listeners and often attempts to divert royalties to bad actors.”

To address these issues, Spotify has already removed over 75 million tracks flagged as spam in the past year. The company is also introducing a spam filter to detect deceptive practices such as mass uploading, duplicate tracks, artificial shortening, and other manipulative tactics. These efforts are designed to protect genuine artists while maintaining a high-quality experience for listeners.

A second area of focus is unauthorized AI voice cloning. Spotify plans to prevent artists’ voices from being used without permission, a practice that can undermine an artist’s identity and threaten the integrity of their work. The company is partnering with major music distributors to stop deepfake tracks from being uploaded to official profiles and to protect artists from exploitation.

“Unauthorized use of AI to clone an artist’s voice exploits their identity, undermines their artistry, and threatens the fundamental integrity of their work,” the blog read. “Some artists may choose to license their voices to AI projects — and that’s their choice to make. Our job is to do what we can to ensure that the choice stays in their hands.”

Transparency is another key pillar of Spotify’s plan. The company is working with Digital Data Exchange to create standards for crediting AI-generated content, allowing listeners to clearly see how AI contributed to a track. These disclosures are meant to strengthen trust in the platform, not punish creators who embrace AI tools.

“This standard gives artists and rights holders a way to clearly indicate where and how AI played a role in the creation of a track — whether that’s AI-generated vocals, instrumentation, or post-production,” Spotify explained. “By supporting an industry standard and helping to drive its wide adoption, we can ensure listeners see the same information, no matter which service they’re listening on. And ultimately, that preserves trust across the entire music ecosystem.”

With these measures, Spotify aims to strike a balance between encouraging innovation in music and maintaining fairness and transparency for artists and fans.
