Register to Vote Today: Your Voice Matters This Election Season—Get Started Here:

istock

Today’s the day! In certain states, it’s easier than ever to participate in choosing the nation’s next leader—thanks to same-day voter registration available on Election Day. If you haven’t registered yet, you still have a chance to make your voice heard in more than 20 states, including Washington, D.C., where eligible voters can register and vote up until the polls close tonight.

To register, most states will require you to bring proof of residency and an accepted form of ID, so be sure to contact your local election office or check Vote.gov for more information. In some of these states, same-day registration may apply only to the presidential and vice-presidential races, so it’s worth confirming the details before heading to the polls.

North Dakota residents have some luck, as voter registration is not required to cast a vote, meaning eligible voters can visit the polls without any prior requirements. On the other hand, states like Alaska and Rhode Island only allow same-day registration for presidential elections.

Additionally, another reason you shouldn’t panic about your voter’s registration status is that most states have automatic registration. Residents are automatically registered to vote when interacting with certain government agencies, such as visiting the Department of Motor Vehicles. If an individual prefers not to be registered, they have a choice to opt-out.

Check the list below to see states offering same-day registration:
