Steph & Ayesha Curry Announce New STEM Scholarship Program For Young Girls

Steph and Ayesha Curry have announced a new scholarship fund to benefit young women in the Bay Area interested in pursuing careers within STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) industries.

The Steph & Ayesha Curry Family Foundation announced that the scholarship was inspired by a challenge from 9-year-old Riley Morrison, who asked Curry why his Under Armour sneaker line didn’t have colors for girls. So, in honor of Morrison and International Women’s Day, Curry released a purple colorway for his Curry 6 sneaker,  which was also co-designed by Morrison.

However, Steph was reportedly uncomfortable with profiting off of Morrison’s design so he arranged with Under Armour to have profits from the shoe go toward a scholarship “that will impact girls for years to come.”

The annual scholarship will be awarded to a college-bound female student in the California Bay Area “who has shown an aptitude for overcoming adversity, catalyzing change within her community and demonstrating excellence in a STEM-related field of study.” The $30,000 award will be paid throughout a two year period and requires the recipient to maintain atleast a 3.0 GPA.

The first scholarship winner, Vivian Wu, was announced last week at the Golden State vs Denver Nuggets game.
