Supreme Court Confirms Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson

Black girl magic!

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson has become the first Black woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court.

Thursday, the Senate confirmed Judge Jackson by a 53-47 vote, marking a major milestone for the nation’s highest court.

Before the confirmation vote, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the moment a “joyous, momentous, groundbreaking day.”

“In the 233-year history of the Supreme Court, never, never has a Black woman held the title of Justice. Ketanji Brown Jackson will be the first and I believe the first of more to come,” he continued.

The President of the NAACP also spoke out following Judge Jackson’s confirmation, saying,Ā ā€œIn 2022, the first Black woman will finally sit on Americaā€™s supreme court. It has taken far too long, but President Biden promised and delivered,ā€ he said in a statement.

ā€œFormer NAACP Chief CounselĀ Thurgood Marshall broke down the wall when he was nominated and confirmed as the first Black American to sit on the Supreme Court. Today, Ketanji Brown Jackson shattered the glass ceiling,” he continued.

Earlier this year, President Joe Biden announced the historical selectionĀ of Jackson to replaceĀ retiring Justice Stephen BreyerĀ on the nation’s highest court.
Jackson will be sworn in after Breyer retires sometime this summer.
