Taco Bell To Introduce A Plant-Based Meat Alternative

Taco Bell is joining the plant-based train by introducing a new vegan meat alternative.

Eating cleaner and leaner is the new wave restaurants, and food franchises are trying to ride. Taco Bell is now the latest food chain to give vegan meat to its vegetarian customers. While Taco Bell already has various meat alternatives, including potatoes and beans, they’ve now partnered up with Beyond Meat, noting that it will be testing vegan meat this year.

Before customers get Beyond Meat tacos, Taco Bell plans on making their own vegan meat in the chain’s test kitchen. CNBC reports the vegetarian version of Taco Bell’s taco will be called Cravetarian Taco, which will be a veggie option of its Crunchy Taco Supreme. The meat used will include a blend of peas and chickpeas. The taco will also have cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream.

Right now, the Cravetarian Taco is only available at a Taco Bell located in Tustin, California. There, the taco will be tested until April 29. The news outlet reports that customers can also use veggie meat on other menu items like burritos and chalupas.

The restaurant announced it would be looking into vegetarian alternatives back in January. Taco Bell is owned by Yum Brands, which also owns KFC and Pizza Hut.
