Taraji P. Henson is returning to the realm of publishing with a brand new children’s book.
Henson recently shared with PEOPLE that her upcoming children’s book, “You Can Be a Good Friend (No Matter What!),” will be released this year by Zonderkidz, a HarperCollins imprint. The book is scheduled to hit shelves on June 18, 2024.
Henson has openly discussed her personal battles with mental health in previous instances. Through her Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, she endeavors to break down the stigma associated with mental health within the Black community. With her latest book, Henson seeks to support children who might encounter bullying due to embracing their individuality.
“Mental health struggles can start even in childhood and oftentimes it begins with being bullied,” Henson said. “This book isn’t just about bullying though—it’s about how children all have something different about them, and being different is what makes them oh so very special.”
Through her latest children’s book, Henson aims to inspire youngsters to show kindness towards one another and address their own anxieties. Her goal is to use the book as a tool to advocate for mental wellness and enhance children’s social skills. Additionally, she emphasizes the significance of embracing individuality and prioritizing friendship over bullying.
“So You Can Be a Good Friend (No Matter What!)is for the kids who feel different. This book is for the parents who want their kids to accept differences. And this book is for the kids and families who’ve encountered hard times because of differences,” she added. “I can’t wait to see the many conversations my book starts in homes and classrooms everywhere!”
Illustrated by Paul Kellam, the book narrates the tale of Lil TJ’s unconventional and fashion-forward debut at school. Upon her arrival, she finds herself unintentionally standing out in ways she didn’t anticipate. Beau, one of her classmates, starts teasing her, causing Lil TJ to feel anxious. However, drawing on valuable advice from her Grandma Patsy, she learns how to forge new friendships and offer assistance to others in the process.
