Target Recalling Nearly 5 Million Candles After Severe Burns Reported

Target is pumping the brakes on millions of Threshold-brand candles after multiple reports of glass breaking, cuts, and other injuries.

On Friday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that the retailer is recalling close to five million of the popular brand due to these serious safety concerns. Target has received 137 complaints about the candle jars coming apart while the candle was lit. Six injuries have been reported, including deep lacerations and severe burns to customers. The recall is specifically aimed at Threshold glass jar 5.5-ounce 1-Wick, 14-ounce 3-Wick, and 20-ounce 3-Wick candles, the CPSC reports. Many different scents are part of the recall, including Red Mandarin and Guava, Coconut Sorbet, and Warm Cider Cinnamon, just to name a few. A complete list of scents and their respective sizes are available on the commission’s website.

The candles in question were manufactured in Vietnam and sold at Target stores and on target.com between August 2019 and March 2023. Prices ranged from $3 and $20.

Consumers are asked to review candle purchases recently made at Target to ensure they are not using the damaged goods. Anyone with them inside their homes is being asked to stop use immediately and return them to any target location for a full refund. Customers may also contact the store to receive a shipping label to ship the candles via mail.

Anyone with questions about the recall is encouraged to contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission Consumer Hotline at 800-638-2772 and reference recall number 23-204. Target has not commented publicly on the matter.
