Teddy Riley is revisiting the story behind one of R&B’s most recognizable songs, and it turns out “Just Got Paid” did not originally belong to Johnny Kemp.

During a recent interview on “The Kenny Burns Show,” Riley explained that the record was first intended for Keith Sweat while his debut album was already being finalized. At that point, the label had begun mastering the project and putting its release plan in place, which made it difficult to add new material without disrupting the rollout.
Because of that timing, Riley chose to keep the song rather than try to force it onto the album.
According to Riley, his manager at the time, Gene Griffin, ultimately decided to give the record to Kemp. The move shifted the trajectory of the song and gave Kemp what would become the biggest hit of his career.
Riley also reflected on how he already knew Kemp was capable of delivering a standout performance. Before any of them broke through, Riley, Sweat, and Kemp were all part of the same live music circuit, performing in different bands and rotating through the same venues. That early exposure gave Riley confidence in Kemp’s ability.
When it came time to record “Just Got Paid,” Kemp completed the song in a single take, a detail Riley highlighted as a testament to his talent and preparation.
Although Kemp did not go on to replicate the same level of chart success, “Just Got Paid” has remained a lasting presence in R&B. Riley acknowledged that Sweat may still have feelings about the record, but the song ultimately found its audience and continues to resonate years later.
