That’s Baller: McLaren Is Now Considering Its First SUV After Initially Rejecting the Idea

McLaren is putting some serious thought into developing its first SUV, which will likely be all-electric.

With a new CEO comes fresh ideas, and Michael Leiters hopes to introduce innovations to the luxury automotive brand. Leiters brings a treasure trove of knowledge to the company, having helped develop SUVs for other posh vehicle brands, like Ferrari and Porsche.

Even considering a sport utility vehicle is a massive step for McLaren. Initially, the company rejected the idea of this vehicle model despite its competitors debuting instantaneously popular SUVs such as the Lamborghini Urus, which has been a huge money maker for the Italian car manufacturer.

In 2019, McLaren’s former design chief, Mark Roberts, shut down all rumors of a possible SUV. At the time, Roberts felt that the company wouldn’t be able to guarantee the same quality in an SUV as they have in their sports cars.

However, if anyone is fit to tackle such a project, it is Leiters. He previously led the development efforts of Porsche’s Cayenne SUV and Ferrari’s forthcoming Purosangue SUV. Leiters’ expertise is sure to guarantee that any McLaren SUV lives up to the standards that have been set forth by the illustrious vehicle company.

“I developed an SUV at Ferrari,” Leiters told Autocar in an exclusive interview. “I developed an SUV at Porsche, so I love SUVs. But we won’t do it for me. Yet I think it’s a really important market.”

Sources close to the matter have also reported that the McLauren SUV will likely be all-electric whenever it goes on the market. This comes as no surprise, considering the influx of car manufacturers now switching to rechargeable vehicles to reduce emissions in the automotive industry.

If McLaren does decide to move forward with the SUV, consumers will not be seeing this model any time soon. Insiders predict that the SUV will not be available until the second half of the decade, with a price tag of around $400,000.
