Alex O’Keefe, the award-winning screenwriter behind “The Bear,” was detained on a Connecticut-bound Metro-North train last Thursday following a complaint from a passenger.

The complaint came from an “old white woman,” whom O’Keefe referred to as a “Karen” in his social media post. He shared videos and photos of the incident on Instagram, including an image of the woman who complained and an elderly man who watched the arrest.
One video shows O’Keefe protesting as police place him in handcuffs and escort him from the train car. Another clip depicts him facing a wall while officers appear to write a ticket. O’Keefe’s posts describe frustration that the police did not take a statement from the woman who complained.
“An old white woman got on the train and immediately pointed at me and told me to correct how I was sitting,” O’Keefe wrote. He added that the woman’s companion said, “You’re not the minority anymore.”

After being removed, O’Keefe said police told him he was “disturbing the peace by not leaving.” He described being detained and questioned on the platform.
“Only Black folks stayed nearby and recorded the arrest. When I demanded a lawyer and reminded them they didn’t even take a statement from the woman who complained, they eventually released me. This country is growing more psycho by the day. What will you do about it?”
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department confirmed they responded to a report of a “disorderly passenger.”
In a statement to the Daily Beast, they said, “The train was en route from Grand Central Terminal to New Haven when a conductor reported a passenger occupying two seats had refused to remove his feet from one of the seats.” Security footage reportedly showed a “31-year-old male” with both legs stretched across an adjacent seat.
O’Keefe was later allowed to board the next train and was issued a summons for disorderly conduct.
He is best known for his work on The Bear, for which he won a Writers Guild of America Award in 2023, and has also worked as a speechwriter for politicians, including Senator Elizabeth Warren.
O’Keefe’s Instagram posts have sparked discussions online about public policing, racial bias, and how minor disagreements can escalate in public spaces.
