There Is A Rated-R Version Of Mrs. Doubtfire

Mrs. Doubtfire director, Chris Columbus, joined the conversation on Friday after Twitter went crazy over the fact that the ever-so-famous movie might have an NC-17 version.

It all started with a tweet from 2015. According to Entertainment Weekly (EW), a post referencing an old interview with Columbus resurfaced on Thursday. Within the post, Columbus hints at there being PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17 cuts of the film.

But, on Friday, Columbus contradicts himself, saying there will never be an NC-17 version. Yet, there are three separate versions.

Having three versions of the same film is credited to Robins’ “penchant for improv.”

“The reality is that there was a deal between Robin and myself, which was, he’ll do one or two, three scripted takes. And then he would say, ‘Then let me play.’ And we would basically go on anywhere between 15 to 22 takes. I think 22 is the most I remember,” Columbus recalled.

“He would sometimes go into territory that wouldn’t be appropriate for a PG-13 movie, but certainly appropriate and hilariously funny for an R-rated film. I only [previously] used the phrase NC-17 as a joke. There could be no NC-17 version of the movie.”

The next question to be asked is whether or not audiences will be graced with any of the other versions? The answer is not entirely.

Columbus shared with EW that he thinks the best approach would be to do a documentary on the movie’s making. Featured within the documentary will be clips re-edited in an R-rated version.

Since it has been decades, Columbus did admit that he does not remember most of the other versions, but he does remember the content being “outrageously funny material.”
