Tinder Says Situationships Are On the Rise Amongst Young People, Many Consider it a “Relationship Status”

Tinder is looking back on another successful year for daters on its app, and surprisingly, “situationships” are high on people’s list of preferences.

The dating platform released its Year in Swipe, which recaps trends and interests on the platform. Tinder shared that the top trend of the year was “situationships.” Different people tend to have various definitions for this relationship status. Some view it as a casual dating set-up where neither party dates other people, despite not being in a monogamous relationship. Others believe a situationship is when two people are dating but not having sex with one another. Either way, these unique sets of circumstances are common amongst love hopefuls today.

Tinder conducted a survey last month to better understand what singles are looking for today. The study examined users aged 18-24 in the U.K., U.S., and Australia. Surprisingly, 1 in 10 participants admitted to preferring situationships as a stepping stone of sorts before entering into a fully committed relationship. Even more telling is that 49 percent of users added “situationship” to their profiles between January and October.

These results only looked into young singles and did not account for more seasoned Tinder users who might be on the prowl for something with a bit more substance. However, with the current divorce rates, it is no surprise that the younger generation of singles are not eager to jump into serious unions so quickly. According to World Population Review, about 50% of married couples in the United States divorce, making it the sixth-highest divorce rate in the world. Second marriages have about a 60% divorce rate, while third marriages are especially doomed, with 73% ending in divorce.

Which one would you prefer, a strong situationship or a committed relationship?
