Trump Threatens 200% Tariff on Wine and Champagne if French President Emmanuel Macron Won’t Join His Board of Peace

Donald Trump is once again putting trade threats front and center, this time aimed squarely at France’s wine industry.

Speaking to reporters this week, Trump said he would impose a 200 percent tariff on French wine and Champagne if French President Emmanuel Macron refuses to join his proposed “Board of Peace,” a U.S.-led diplomatic initiative. Trump framed the threat as leverage, telling reporters that France could avoid the tariffs by signing on, though he added that participation was technically optional.

The comments immediately raised alarms across Europe, especially because wine and Champagne are major French exports to the United States, worth billions of dollars annually. A tariff at that level would effectively price many French bottles out of the U.S. market.

Trump also claimed that joining the Board of Peace would require a $1 billion contribution. According to reporting on a draft charter circulated to dozens of countries, that figure refers to a long-term membership cost, not an entry fee for short-term participation. The board is described as a multilateral body focused on global conflict resolution, though details about its structure, authority, and funding remain limited.

French officials have signaled that Macron does not plan to join the initiative. While Paris has not formally responded to Trump’s tariff threat, European officials have criticized the idea of tying trade penalties to diplomatic participation.

No new tariffs have been enacted so far. Any move to impose a 200 percent duty would likely trigger legal challenges and escalate tensions between Washington and the European Union.

For now, the threat stands as rhetoric, but it underscores how Trump continues to use tariffs as a pressure tool in foreign policy negotiations.
