Trump Administration Rolls Back Obamacare Birth Control Mandate

After a botched attempt to provide relief and compassion for the victims of the three catastrophic hurricanes that devastated parts of the United States and its territory, Donald Trump is back to regularly scheduled programming – reversing Obama-era legislations and directives.

On Friday, the Department of Health and Human Services released two new rules that would allow companies to make exceptions to covering birth control under Obamacare.

Now, employers will be able to refuse contraception coverage for religious reasons, as well as on the basis of moral conviction. However, according to the department, the change will only affect 120,000 women nationally.

“No American should be forced to violate his or her own conscience in order to abide by laws and regulations governing our health care system,” the press secretary for the department said in a statement. “Today’s action affirm the Trump administration’s commitment to upholding the freedoms afforded all American under our Constitution.”

As expected, lawsuits have already been filed by the American Civil Liberties Union to refute the new rules.

“The Trump administration is forcing women to pay for their boss’s religious beliefs,” ALCU said in a statement.

“The Trump administration just took a direct aim at birth control coverage for 62 million women. This is an unacceptable attack on basic heath care that the vast majority of women rely on,” Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said. “With this rule in place, any employer could decide that their employees no longer have health insurance coverage for birth control.”
