Earlier this month, U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore was accused of sexually assaulting several women when they were between the ages of 14 and 17. He was in his 30s at the time. Since then, several Republican Senators have pulled their endorsements of Moore’s candidacy, with many calling for Moore to withdraw.

However, despite the allegations and subsequent backlash, top White House advisor Kellyanne Conway endorsed Moore, by beating around the bush and bashing his opponent. The adviser discussed the Alabamian senate vote, saying the White House would not be encouraging them to support the Republican. However, she did warn that if the votes get messed up, the tax bill would fail.

Conway then continued to discuss the vote, now-focusing on Moore’s opponent, Doug Jones. She warned that the Alabama Democrat would not be as conservative as she knew the state would like.

“The guy Doug Jones is a doctrinaire liberal,” Conway said. “I just want everybody to know Doug Jones. Nobody ever says his name, and they pretend that he’s some kind of conservative Democrat in Alabama, and he’s not.”

On Tuesday, Donald Trump confirmed Conway’s claims about the Senate candidate, encouraging Alabama voters to support the Republican. He defended Moore, explaining that his denial is enough to prove that the allegations against him are not true.

“He denies it. Look, he denies it,” Trump said of Moore. “If you look at all the things that have happened over the last 48 hours. He totally denies it. He says it didn’t happen. And look, you have to look at him also.”

“We don’t need a liberal person in there, a Democrat, Jones,” Trump added, encouraging Alabamians to vote Republican. “I’ve looked at his record. It’s terrible on crime. It’s terrible on the border. It’s terrible on military. I can tell you for a fact we do not need somebody who’s going to be bad on crime, bad on borders, bad for military, bad for the Second Amendment.”

To makes matters worse, when asked if he believed Moore’s denial, he declined to respond. However, he did say that 40 years is a long time after the incident occurred for the accuser to come forward.
“Well, he denies. I mean, he denies. I mean Roy Moore denies it. And by the way, it is a total denial. And I do have to say 40 years is a long time. He’s run eight races and this has never come up. Forty years is a long time,” he said, according to CNN.
