Donald Trump has officially ended Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, reversing a decision made by President Joe Biden earlier this year, CNN reports.
“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” a senior adviser to Harris told NBC News.
While federal law limits protection for former vice presidents to six months after leaving office, Biden had signed a memorandum in January granting Harris an 18-month extension. Trump’s reversal pulls the plug before that extended timeline concludes.
A senior White House official confirmed the move, noting that the original six-month protection window had already passed.
This decision follows Trump’s earlier call to end protection for President Biden’s adult children, Hunter and Ashley.
Under current law, former presidents and their spouses receive lifelong protection unless they decline it, while protection for their children ends at age 16.
Trump stripping Harris of secret service detail comes just weeks before she is scheduled to kick off her book tour for her memoir, “107 Days.”
