Donald Trump stunned the world after declaring that the United States will run Venezuela until there is a “safe, proper, and judicious transition,” a statement that came directly after confirmed U.S. military action inside the country.

In the early hours, U.S. forces carried out airstrikes across key locations in Venezuela, followed by a coordinated operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The move marked one of the most aggressive foreign interventions in modern U.S. history and instantly escalated tensions across the region.

Speaking publicly after the operation, Donald Trump did not soften his language. “We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition,” he said, framing the U.S. not as an outside force but as the authority now calling the shots.

For many watching, especially across Latin America and the Caribbean, the words landed heavy. The idea of “temporary” U.S. control carries deep historical baggage, particularly for Black and brown communities who know how often outside intervention reshapes nations without protecting the people living there.

Trump offered no details on how long the U.S. would remain in charge, who would oversee the transition, or how Venezuelans themselves would participate in shaping what comes next. The phrase “safe and proper” sounded calm, but without clarity, it raised more questions than reassurance.
