Two Homeless People Killed After Driver Crashes Into Their Tents

Two people who are believed to be homeless died after a driver crashed into their tents.

At around 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday, a man and woman, who appeared to be living in a homeless encampment tent, were killed after a motorist crashed into their tents. The incident took place at 5200 Flower St. near Exposition Park.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said the man drove up on a curve and struck the man and woman’s homes. The man was inside one tent, and the woman was in another.

“His car, according to witnesses, launched somewhat airborne … when his car comes back down and lands in the street, he appears to lose control,” said the spokesperson. “He ends up running off the roadway, going up over the curb, and into a homeless encampment.”

The suspect tried to make an escape from the scene, but police picked him up and arrested him not long after the crash. “Just tragic and real unfortunate,” said the LAPD spokesperson. “These poor victims are really just minding their own business, you know? At home, basically in their tents. One’s asleep, and one’s just resting.”

ABC 7 reports the suspect could be looking at manslaughter charges and other murder-related charges.
