71% of Baby Food in U.S. Stores Is Ultra-Processed and What Researchers Found Will Shock Parents

A new national study is raising serious questions about what is actually inside many baby food products lining U.S. grocery store shelves.

Research published February 11 in the journal Nutrients found that 71 percent of baby and toddler food items sold in leading U.S. grocery chains qualify as ultra-processed. The findings were released by The George Institute for Global Health.

Researchers reviewed 651 infant and toddler food products from the top ten grocery store chains across the country. They used the NOVA classification system, which groups foods based on how heavily they are industrially processed rather than their basic nutrient content, according to the National Library of Medicine.

The study determined that a large share of these products were made with highly processed ingredients and additives.

“Infancy is a critical time for shaping lifelong eating habits — introducing babies to foods that are overly sweet, salty, and packed with additives can set the stage for unhealthy preferences that last beyond childhood,” said study author Elizabeth Dunford in a statement.

She added, “We also know that high UPF [ultra-processed food] consumption in children is linked to heart and metabolic conditions later in life, so it’s best to try and avoid introducing them in the first place.”

According to the analysis, additives were the most common ingredient category, appearing in 71 percent of products. Flavor enhancers showed up in 36 percent of items, while thickeners appeared in 29 percent. Emulsifiers and colors were each found in 19 percent of the foods studied. In total, researchers identified more than 105 distinct additive ingredients.

Dunford told CNN she was “shocked” that in many cases the primary ingredient “wasn’t a fruit or vegetable — it was one or more additives.” She also noted that “babies’ guts are not fully developed enough to be able to handle additives in the way an adult stomach could.”

The study further found that ultra-processed products contained roughly twice the amount of sugar as less processed options. They also tended to have higher sodium levels and were more calorie-dense.

Snack-size packages ranked highest for ultra-processing at 94 percent, followed by 86 percent of full-size meals and 73 percent of pouches.

Dunford encouraged parents to carefully read ingredient labels before purchasing. She said, “Clearer labelling and specific regulation for baby foods are urgently needed to help parents make more informed choices. Until then, checking the ingredients list is one of the best ways to spot the highly processed options — if you see an ingredient you don’t recognize, then it’s probably best to put it back on the shelf.”
