The legal fallout surrounding the death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson continues to grow after a grand jury indicted all five men accused in connection with the hazing incident that claimed his life.
According to WAFB, East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore confirmed the indictments and said investigators are still pushing forward, hoping those involved will cooperate as the case develops. Two of the accused, Jadyn Landrum, 24, and Winston Craig Sanders, 22, were recently booked into parish jail on nine misdemeanor hazing counts each.
The remaining three defendants are facing more serious consequences. Caleb McCray, 24, Isaiah Earl Smith, 29, and Kyle Thurman, 25, were arrested earlier this year and now stand indicted on felony charges. McCray is charged with manslaughter. Smith was indicted as a principal to manslaughter and for obstruction of justice, while Thurman faces an obstruction charge. Prosecutors also revealed that a sixth person remains under investigation and could be indicted if new evidence emerges.
Wilson, who was 20 years old, died on February 27 after attending an off-campus event connected to the pledging process for Omega Psi Phi at Southern. Investigators say pledges were required to take several blows to the chest using boxing gloves. According to police findings, McCray delivered the final punch, after which Wilson went into medical distress. He later died from commotio cordis, a condition triggered by blunt chest impact that disrupts heart rhythm and can lead to sudden cardiac arrest.
The incident led Southern University to expel the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi. The fraternity’s national organization also stripped McCray, Smith, and Thurman of their memberships.
Wilson’s family has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit naming multiple defendants, including the expelled chapter, the national fraternity, Southern University, the state of Louisiana, and individuals believed to be involved. Beyond the charges and court filings, the loss has shaken the campus and HBCU community.
Wilson was a mechanical engineering major and a trumpet player in the Human Jukebox Marching Band, remembered for his discipline, talent, and a future that was cut short far too soon.
