Venezuela Accuses U.S. Navy of Illegally Detaining Fishermen on Tuna Boat in Caribbean Waters

The Venezuelan government is calling out the United States for what it describes as an aggressive and unlawful military act at sea.

As reported by PBS, on Friday, a Venezuelan fishing vessel reportedly had an uninvited visit from 18 armed U.S. Navy personnel, who boarded the tuna boat and stayed for nearly eight hours.

According to Foreign Minister Yván Gil, “Those who give the order to carry out such provocations are seeking an incident that would justify a military escalation in the Caribbean.”

Gil said the boat had full authorization from Venezuelan fisheries to operate, and the fishermen were unable to communicate or work during the U.S. presence. The situation only ended when the Venezuelan Navy intervened and escorted their citizens back safely.

Venezuela released video footage it claims was taken by the fishermen, showing the U.S. destroyer and its armed crew on board. Gil didn’t hold back, calling the act “illegal” and “illegitimate,” warning that Venezuela won’t tolerate any threats to its sovereignty.

This isn’t the first maritime clash. Just days ago, the U.S. claimed it sank a Venezuelan-origin boat carrying drugs and gang members. No evidence has been released, and Caracas denies it ever happened.

As tensions rise, Venezuela has urged civilians to begin militia training in case of further conflict. Meanwhile, the White House remains silent.
