Wale is taking his connection to Washington D.C. in a bold new direction with “Silk,” a television series focused on the city’s violent past and the life of Wayne “Silk” Perry.

The Grammy-nominated rapper, who grew up in the nation’s capital, is serving as executive producer to bring one of the most infamous stories in D.C.’s underworld to television.

The series traces Perry’s life from 1989 to 1993, a period when Washington D.C., recorded the highest murder rates in the country. Perry worked as a feared enforcer for Harlem drug dealer Alpo Martinez, who moved his cocaine operation into the city after the fall of local kingpin Rayful Edmond.

Known for his deadly precision, Perry quickly became one of the most dangerous men in the city’s criminal scene.

“This story is one of the last authentic stories in Black crime lore,” Wale’s manager, Kazz Laidlaw, explained. “People have seen slivers in movies like ‘Paid in Full’ and read conjecture online, but beneath the surface is an entire world that hasn’t been seen before.”

Perry, now called Nkosi Shaka Zulu El, is serving five life sentences at ADX Florence in Colorado. His convictions stem from a series of murders tied to Martinez’s drug empire.

Among his victims were drug dealer Garrett Terrell and Evelyn Carter, a witness who had been prepared to testify against him. Perry’s arrest and conviction followed Martinez’s cooperation with federal authorities, which included testimony that helped secure Perry’s fate.

Wale has acquired a stake in Perry Industries, the company that holds Perry’s life rights, and will produce the series alongside Laidlaw and C. Edwards of Perry Industries.

He sees the show as an opportunity to explore D.C. beyond headlines and politics.

“D.C. is more than just politics,” Wale said. “We have a rich, Black history that’s inspired audiences around the world, and it’s time to tell more stories that are based here.”

Silk will not just follow Perry’s criminal exploits. It will also reflect the larger environment of early 1990s D.C., including high crime rates, political turmoil, and the energy of the city’s go-go music scene.

That era also included the Washington Redskins’ Super Bowl victories, Mayor Marion Barry facing federal investigation, and Congress passing the 1994 crime bill, all while the city struggled through record violence.

The series is still in development, and no network or streaming platform has been announced, but it promises to shine a light on a side of D.C. that has rarely been portrayed with depth or authenticity.
