World’s Second-Tallest Roller Coaster To Close Permanently After Metal Object Flies Off And Hits Woman In The Head

The world’s second-tallest roller coaster is being shut down after a metal object flew off and hit a woman in the head.

A year ago, a woman attending Sandusky, Ohios Cedar Point theme park, was struck in the head by a metal object that flew off the 420-foot tall Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster. There were no signs that the coaster was unsafe or that the theme park was operating the ride illegally, NBC News reports.

The ride has been shut down since the incident on Aug. 15, 2021. On Tuesday, the amusement park announced the ride would be closed down permanently after 19 years.

In a statement, the park said, “the legacy of the ride innovation continues. Our team is hard at work, creating a new and reimagined ride experience.” NBC News reports the park is looking into new ideas around a new experience for theme park guests.
