YouTube wants you to message your buddies the latest makeup tutorial videos while still inside the app.
According to Tech Crunch, the platform is testing a revamped in-app messaging feature years after quietly retiring the original version in 2019. This new test allows users to privately share content like Shorts, livestreams, and long-form videos directly within the mobile interface. By tapping the Share button, users can launch a full-screen chat for either one-on-one or group conversations. Friends can reply with another video, text, emojis, or simply keep the thread going.
The test is currently limited to users aged 18 and older in Ireland and Poland. YouTube described in-app messaging as a “top feature request,” especially since sharing videos now typically requires third-party apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, or email.
Back when YouTube removed messaging, the reasoning was vague. Some suspected low usage, while others pointed to safety concerns, particularly regarding younger users. With ongoing scrutiny around content moderation and child safety, YouTube is proceeding cautiously.
For now, the feature is only available to adults. Built-in protections include requiring mutual invites before chats can begin, options to block or report users, and tools to unsend messages. Conversations will also be reviewed for compliance with YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
