Nevada Man May Serve No Jail Time After His Mother Died In Hot Car While He Worked 8-Hour Shift

A Nevada man may not receive any jail time after his mother died in a hot car during his eight-hour shift at work.

Edward Sibley has previously been charged with felony elderly abuse; however, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charger earlier this month. And now, he could possibly not serve any jail time for leaving his mother in a hot car for eight hours. The incident happened back in the summer of 2020 when the two were homeless, living in motels and their car in Reno, PEOPLE reports. On July 14, Sibley went to work and left his 81-year-old mother in the car while it 96 degrees outside, according to KRNV-TV.

PEOPLE reports the woman was wearing a T-shirt and a diaper. Sibley took off for work, but he left the car keys behind so she could turn on the air conditioner. Instead of turning the air on, the woman reportedly died from the intense heat.

Sibley told police that he visited her during his lunch and brought her a burrito. At that time, Sibley says the woman was “OK.” The police reports stated Sibley’s mother “had no cell phone, was unable to walk, unable to drive, and unable to seek shade from the heat and sun.” It wasn’t until two workers at Sibley’s job noticed the woman sitting in the parking lot and called an ambulance. The woman died later that day; police report her core temperature was 106 degrees.

“That hinged on poor choices, very difficult circumstances. There was homelessness involved, there were certainly attempts to care, but the bad decision really hinged on the circumstances of that day,” said Michelle Bays, a spokeswoman for the Washoe County District Attorney. “There wasn’t proof or evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, and there really wasn’t evidence at all to prove that he had any intent to cause harm.”

The news outlet reports that Sibley could land himself in jail for one year, but prosecutors are reportedly suggesting he only get probation.

A Nevada Teen and Her Boyfriend Were Arrested After Bizarre Video Showed The Two Laughing About “Murdering Somebody”

A teenage girl and her boyfriend are currently being charged after a bizarre video showed the two laughing about “murdering somebody” and having lots of sex.

Prosecutors are using the shocking video obtained by KLAS to charge Aaron Guerrero, 18, and his 16-year-old girlfriend, Sierra Halseth, the daughter of a former Nevada state senator.

“Welcome back to our YouTube channel … Day 3 after murdering somebody …” Guerrero, with a smirk on his face, says into the camera.

“Whoa!” Halseth responds, giggling, “Don’t put that on camera.” Guerrero says, “It was worth it,” before kissing his girlfriend on the forehead.

The teen then boasts about how they “had sex a lot today,” to which her boyfriend mumbles, it was “payment for doing it.”

He then smacked her across the face and wrapped his hand around her throat, making Halseth pretend to choke before glancing at the camera with her eyes wide and casually saying, “So, yeah.”

According to the article, the purported admission was videotaped in April, six days after they reportedly killed Halseth’s father, Daniel Halseth, 45, by dismembering him and setting fire to his home.

They left in the father’s blue Nissan Altima but were apprehended in Salt Lake City less than a week later, apparently traveling to California.

According to KLAS, the father was killed when the teens’ parents told them they couldn’t be together any longer.

Police say that the two teens stabbed him and attempted to set fire and dismember him while using his bank card to purchase the items needed for the crime.

According to the story, prosecutors showed the grand jury images of the daughter buying bleach and her boyfriend buying a saw, lighter fluid, and gloves.

Prosecutors also showed the jury photographs of the blood-soaked crime scene, which included knives, saws, lighter fluid, burned items, and a blood-soaked rug was discovered in the trunk of the getaway car.

According to text conversations obtained by KLAS, the smoke-filled crime scene was uncovered when Daniel Halseth’s mother, Christine Halseth, couldn’t reach him – and grew increasingly dubious of her granddaughter’s excuses.

She reportedly texted, “His phone has been acting up, but he’s okie,” the teen texted her concerned grandmother at some point, according to the texts. “It should be all fixed by tomorrow night, no worries :)”

“Why are you doing this?” Christine Halseth asked her granddaughter the next day. “Now the police are involved.”

Even though she is only 16, the daughter has been charged as an adult, but she cannot face the death penalty under Nevada law, according to KLAS.

In addition to the murder allegations, the two have been charged with conspiracy, arson, robbery, and fraudulent credit card use.

Guerrero, who is 18 years old, might face the death penalty. According to his attorney, Gabriel Grasso, the case will be evaluated by the district attorney’s office next week.

Sierra’s mother, Elizabeth Halseth, was a Republican state senator who was elected as the youngest person to the Nevada Senate at the age of 27 in 2010, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. She has since remarried and has remained silent on the claims leveled against her daughter.

In a statement released to KLAS, the deceased man’s family said he was “first and foremost a loving father, brother, and son, who was the heart of the Halseth family.” The family added, “To have him taken from us in such a horrific, savage, senseless, and violent act of murder leaves us heartbroken, and our grief is unyielding.” The statement continued, “The total lack of remorse on display in the video is both reprehensible and unforgivable.” The family said it is “waiting for justice to be served with the maximum accountability allowed.” They added, “We loved Dan very much, and we miss him every moment of the day.”

Police Officer Sues Nevada City For $1 Million For Suspending Him Over Racist Comments

A police officer who was suspended for threatening Black Lives Matter activists on social media is now suing the city that he worked for.

George Forbush, who served as a bomb squad technician for 19 years in Sparks, Nevada, is suing the city for $1 million in damages. He claims that they violated his free speech rights by suspending him for his racist comments on Twitter.

The tweets were in response to a video where protesters were seen attempting to burn an American flag. Forbush expressed wanting to “build a couple AR pistols just for BLM, Antifa, or active shooters who cross my path and can’t maintain social distancing.”

In his lawsuit, Forbush claims that the city punished him due to his “particular viewpoint of his political opinions as expressed on his personal social media,” which was a violation of his First Amendment rights. The suit stated that On Monday, the City Council voted to hire independent counsel to defend Sparks against the federal suit, which was filed last month.

After an anonymous complaint, the city launched a disciplinary investigation. The probe confirmed that Forbush’s posts were made as a private citizen outside of his duties.

Sparks city policy states that all employees and elected officials shouldn’t post biased remarks, harassing statements, and/or threats of violence or any language that can be viewed as malicious, obscene, threatening, or intimidating toward fellow employees, citizens, or vendors.”

One of the two missing Ohio teens found dead in Nevada just days after her friend was found alive in California.

On Tuesday, Dec. 8, 15-year-old Kathryn McGuire was brought into a local hospital in Henderson, Nevada where she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe that on Thanksgiving, McGuire and her friend Haylie Vance, 15, ran away together from their Painesville, Ohio homes.

Vance was found alive on Friday, Dec. 4 by the Long Beach California Police Department. She confirmed to the police that “she and McGuire had voluntarily left the state of Ohio with their friend Aaron Larkin and all three of them had been in California for at least six days.”

According to police, 19-year-old Aaron Larkin who was also reported missing was last seen in Nevada with McGuire. Larkin has since been detained pending an investigation by the Henderson Police Department.

After receiving the missing person reports in late November, police said they, along with “multiple local law enforcement’s and the U.S. Marshals Service all followed many different leads, tirelessly trying to locate the whereabouts of the three missing persons.”

Late Nevada Doctor Used His Sperm To Impregnate Unwitting Patients

A late fertility specialist and alleged child molester is accused of impregnating unwitting patients with his own sperm over the course of forty years, the New York Post reports.

Dr. Quincy Fortier was a Nevada physician and confirmed the biological father of 24 men and women across the nation. His children range from in their 30s to septuagenarians, who have started a society of Fortier half-siblings. According to the group, the membership total seems to go up every month.

“[Sibling] matches tend to come out after Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Black Friday when they do big promos for genealogy kits,” said Wendi Babst. In 2018 she took a DNA test after realizing she didn’t look like the man she always considered her father—in her eyes, she resembled Fortier, her mother’s unwanted sperm donor.

The test confirmed Babst’s worst fear. Fortier was, in fact, her biological father. She has grappled with the results ever since, even contemplating plastic surgery to eliminate his distinctive features. Babst appeared in “Baby God,” an HBO documentary set to air on Wednesday about the scandal, the news outlet reports.

“I want to change my nose [because] there is this monster who is living within me,” the 54-year-old said. She told the outlet she has “complicated” feelings when it comes to her biological father. “I can’t really hate him because I wouldn’t exist without him,” she said. “But I’ve studied nature versus nurture, so it’s scary.”

Babst is one of many who were shocked by the mind-blowing revelation of their biological father, which has also revealed the OB-GYN’s sinister secrets, who was once praised for his ability to help women conceive.

“With or without the patients’ knowledge or consent, doctors would use their own sperm to ‘help’ a woman conceive,” Baby God director Hannah Olson told the Post. “They couldn’t predict the future and the ease with which people are now able to analyze their DNA.”

Olson spoke on the extremeness of a “widespread phenomenon” that she believes went on into the 80s.

Babst’s mother, Cathy Holm, 77, was shocked to learn Fortier fathered her child but admitted she was confused why her daughter did not resemble her father or his side of the family “at all.” She also spoke on her daughter’s intelligence, saying she couldn’t understand it because “we were average.”

Holm was 22 when Fortier, who was 54 at the time, impregnated her at his women’s hospital in Pioche, Nevada. At the time, she thought he was inseminating her with her husband’s sperm.

“[The doctor] was in and out of the exam room two or three times. [I thought] why does he keep going in and out?” she says.

Fortier fathered kids into his 70s and started his practice in 1948. Included in his ill practice was Dorothy Otis, who was a patient of his seeking help with a suspected infection—she left his office pregnant even though she wasn’t trying to conceive.

Otis gave birth to her son Mike who is now 71. Her son discovered Fortier was his biological father after trying to confirm his Native American Indian roots. The discovery has left him grieving the loss of what he thought was “part of his identity.”

But he is also outraged for his mother, 94, because she stated she wasn’t ready to have a child back then and never got the chance to continue her education.

What is also shocking is the story of Jonathan Stensland, now 55. At the age of 17, he was determined to track down his biological parents. He learned his birth mother was Connie Fortier, only 18 years his senior. But he instantly felt there was a dark cloud hanging over her pregnancy. Eventually, she confided in him that she had gotten pregnant by Dr. Fortier, her adopted father, despite having never had intercourse.

“There was some crazy tale about Quincy giving her an examination and getting some swabs mixed up,” recalled Stensland. “He tried to say there was a possibility that it was a virgin birth.”

Stensland finally went to meet his biological father, “He had muscles like mine — like Popeye — and it was very clear we shared the same DNA,” he said. “He was whistling and, if I didn’t know better, I probably would have quite liked the guy.”

When the doctor turned 87, he was hit with a lawsuit claiming he had sexually abused his son Quincey E. Fortier, Jr. from the time he was three to fourteen. The son also alleged he had witnessed his father abuse his siblings and other kids. But a jury denied those claims in 2002.

Quincy Jr., now 67, also appears in the documentary and calls his dad “crazy” and “a pervert” and says he would not be surprised if there are “hundreds” of half-siblings.

“[My father] molested everyone. The happiest he ever made me was lying in his coffin dead. That’s when I knew I was safe.”

Fortier died in 2016. His obituary claimed only eight children, 15 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Local Nevada Police Investigates The Death Of Four People At Apartment Complex

As Nevada continues to monitor vote counts for the 2020 presidential election, local authorities are investigating what caused four people to be killed, including an alleged suspect, in a shooting on Tuesday.

At 11 a.m., police officers responded to a call about possible gunfire and someone being wounded, Henderson police Capt. Jason Kuzik informed reporters. When they arrived at The Douglas at Stonelake apartment complex, authorities found two people that had been shot.

In a nearby car, officers located a possible suspect. An attempt to make contact with the alleged suspect resulted in police shooting and killing the individual, Kuzik continued.

Authorities have yet to confirm the identities of the people involved. The condition of a fifth person who was wounded and transported to a local hospital wasn’t immediately known.

The incident occurred west of central Henderson, 320,000 Southeast of Las Vegas.

One resident, Amber Belmonte, stated that she noticed a handful of police vehicles racing into the complex. She then walked outside to see what was going on.

“I started seeing assault rifles, bulletproof vests,” she recalled.

After witnessing SWAT cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and dozens of marked and unmarked police vehicles approach the complex, gunfire rang out, and Belmonte ran back into her apartment. Outside of what occurred that day, Belmonte says the complex is usually quiet and uneventful.

“I imagined the only thing I was going to stress about was the election,” she said.

Additional details regarding the shooting are currently unknown. The investigation is “dynamic and ongoing.”

A woman has been extradited from Australia back to California to face charges in a fatal hit-and-run, Fox News reports.

Over three years ago, 35-year-old Andrea Dorothy Chan Reyes was involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a 46-year-old man who was riding his bicycle in the area of Calmada Avenue and Flomar Drive dead on Jan. 30, 2017. According to KTLA, the man was identified as Agustin Rodriguez Jr., and police report that he was dragged beneath the car about 500 to 800 feet. Tracy Bloom of KTLA writes that his body was found on Dittmar Drive, about two blocks away from where the crash happened.

Shortly after the crash, investigators learned that Reyes left the U.S. and went to live in Hong Kong. Whittier police and the FBI then sent out an international arrest warrant for her. The FBI found out that Reyes had moved to Australia, where she was later taken into custody with the help of Australian law enforcement.

Nevada Man First Confirmed To Have Been Infected With Coronavirus Twice

A 25-year-old man was infected with COVID-19 twice earlier this year. Scientists in Nevada confirmed the man as the first case of reinfection in the United States and the fifth confirmed reinfection case in the world, NPR reports.

USA Today reports that the man has received care but now his case raises more questions, including how long after can a person be vulnerable to catching the virus again and if the second case different or worse than the first. Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, called the reinfection a “yellow caution light.”

Dr. Paul Offit, an infectious disease expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said he’s not surprised at all that people get infected twice from the respiratory disease, as a one-time infection of COVID-19 does not guarantee lifelong immunity. The man who hails from Washoe County, Nevada had no previous health conditions other than the first coronavirus infection. “There’s hardly an infectious disease doctor in the country who hasn’t encountered a patient who thinks they’ve had a second infection,” he said. “Whether that’s true or not, we don’t know. There are lots of respiratory infections out there.”

The man was infected with coronavirus the second time six weeks after the first case. He originally tested positive for the virus in April and his symptoms included a cough and nausea. He received and tested negative for the virus in May. By the end of May, he was back in urgent care with similar symptoms including fever, cough and dizziness. He tested positive again in June and later went to the hospital. “The second infection was symptomatically more severe than the first,” the authors of the case study wrote in the medical journal The Lancet.

There have been at least 22 documented cases of reinfection around the globe since the beginning of the pandemic. However, there are no clear details on exactly how many cases there actually have been, especially among people who do not or did not know they were infected. “It could be a one in a million event, we don’t know,” said Akiko Iwasaki, an immunologist at Yale University and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, who wrote a commentary with the study, USA Today reports.

After a Nevada county library publicly announced its support of Black Lives Matter, a local sheriff, in turn, warned that his office would no longer respond to their 911 calls. The announcement was a proposed short statement that was released last week at the end of a meeting agenda.

The statement read:

“We support #BlackLivesMatter. We resolutely assert and believe that all forms of racism, hatred, inequality, and injustice don’t belong in our society.”

It was then met with a letter to the library board of trustees by Sheriff Dan Coverley. In the note, Coverley referred to George Floyd’s tragic death while in police custody as “tragic and preventable.” He then argued that the information simply does not aid claims that authorities are “systemically racist or structurally biased.”

The letter, published on the sheriff office’s website ended, stating:

“Due to your support of Black Lives Matter and the obvious lack of support or trust with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, please do not feel the need to call 911 for help.”

It continued:

“I wish you good luck with disturbances and lewd behavior since those are just some of the recent calls my office has assisted you with in the past.”

Douglas County spokesperson Melissa Blosser then recanted Coverley’s letter with a statement of her own. “Sheriff Coverley would also like to take this opportunity to clarify that the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will continue to respond to all 911 calls, including those at the Library,” She told Reno Gazette-Journal.

The library director Amy Dodson later told NBC affiliate KSNV in Las Vegas that the proposed statement “simply was meant to state our inclusivity at the library, that we are open and welcoming to everyone and we treat everyone equally.”

Days after the controversy, Dodson met with Coverley. The two then released a joint statement on social media, revealing that they came to an understanding after a “very candid conversation.”

“We agreed that we both support the people of Douglas County and this may have been an unfortunate circumstance of misunderstanding, The library respects and supports the work of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and appreciates everything they do to keep our community safe,” Dodson said.

“This has been a difficult time to be a law enforcement professional and can be disheartening when we perceive that our office may be under attack. My response was rooted in my belief that these issues need to be openly discussed in a way that values diversity and law enforcement,” Coverley continued.

The joint statement concluded that the planned library board meeting, which was being held to consider the proposed statement, will be rescheduled.

Trump threatened to “hold up” federal funds to Michigan and Nevada in response to the states’ planned use of absentee and mail-in ballots in upcoming elections to mitigate the risk of exposure to the coronavirus, Washington Post reports.

Many states have struggled with how to move forward with near-future elections. Iowa, Georgia, Nebraska, and West Virginia previously chose to use absentee and mail-in ballots, and as of Tuesday, Michigan and Nevada followed suit.

Trump did not say which funds he may withhold and has previously made similar threats that he never followed through on.

Trump has repeatedly protested against mail-in voting, claiming it’s subject to widespread fraud and has hurt Republicans in previous elections; however, he has failed to support these claims with sufficient evidence.

On Wednesday, Trump used his Twitter fingers to rail against Michigan’s announcement that 7.7 million state residents will receive an absentee ballot application by mail for the state’s primary elections in August and the general election in November. The state’s decision is to “ensure that no Michigander has to choose between their health and their right to vote.”

“Breaking: Michigan sends absentee ballots to 7.7 million people ahead of Primaries and the General Election.” Trump wrote on Twitter, incorrectly describing the move to send applications for ballots. “This was done illegally and without authorization by a rogue Secretary of State. I will ask to hold up funding to Michigan if they want to go down this Voter Fraud path!” He tagged the Treasury Department, among others. At the time of Trump’s tweets, the state was dealing with unprecedented flooding after two dams in Midland County collapsed following record rainfall.

Michigan’s Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson responded through her twitter account, making sure to correct Trump.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“It’s Jocelyn Benson, and we sent applications, not ballots. Just like my GOP colleagues in Iowa, Georgia, Nebraska, and West Virginia.”

Trump then aimed a threat at Nevada after the state moved to use Republican Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske’s vote by mail initiative that was introduced in March for its June 9 primary election.

“State of Nevada, “thinks” that they can send out illegal vote by mail ballots, creating a great Voter Fraud scenario for the State and U.S. They can’t! If they do, ‘I think’ I can hold up funds to the state. Sorry, but you must not cheat in elections,” he posted.

At the time, Cegavske said the decision was made “because of the many uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic” and after “extensive conversations” with Nevada’s 17 county election officials.

ABC News reports that three hours after threatening to hold funding to Michigan, Trump tweeted: “My team is closely monitoring the flooding in Central Michigan – Stay SAFE and listen to local officials. Our brave First Responders are once again stepping up to serve their fellow citizens, THANK YOU!”
