California Middle School Students Assigned Huffington Post Op-Ed ‘Why I’m A Racist’; Parents Outraged

California middle schoolers allegedly said an assignment surrounding a Huffington Post op-ed made them “uncomfortable.”

Earlier this year, students at Oak Middle School in Orange County, California, were instructed to analyze a 2017 op-ed from The Huffington Post, titled “Why I’m a Racist.” The assignment immediately drew backlash from parents, Fox News reports. The teacher told students to break down several points and ideas from Huffington Post contributor Jeff Cook.

“It was an uncomfortable situation,” Marshal Violia, a father of a seventh-grade student who was given the assignment, said. “A lot of parents were in agreement.” The article begins with the author describing his life as a white American male.

“I am a white American male. I’m married to a beautiful blond-haired green-eyed woman and have two amazing blond-haired, blue-eyed boys. I was a blond-haired blue-eyed child who grew up in suburban New Jersey in a solid family with a mother, a father, a brother, and two dogs.” Cook addresses how his white privilege has contributed to his inherent racism, unbeknownst to him or not.

He says he is not racist, but that he is “uncomfortable with, ignorant of and distant from racial inequalities that exist in” the U.S., He adds that he is “okay” with admitting he is a racist and that doing so did not make him “evil.” Violia says his son told him the assignment made him “uncomfortable.” Educators say that feeling is normal when discussing race-related issues.

“Learning about racial inequality and how it persists can benefit all because it is a first step to identifying ways to eliminate racial inequality,” she continued. “I also think that it is important for educators to have the kinds of support and services that they need to teach about issues of racial inequality in age-appropriate ways.”

KKK Flyers Were Found In Huntington Beach, Calif. Just One Week Ahead Of Planned ‘White Lives Matter’ Demonstrations

Flyers promoting the Ku Klux Klan were seen posted in Huntington Beach, California.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the flyers posted around the beach come just one week before “white lives matter” marches are expected to happen around the nation, according to the Orange County Register.

The outlet reports that the flyers have been seen throughout the community. One flyer, in particular, was seen on the south end of 19th street. A resident contacted the police about it at 7.am. on Sunday morning, Huntington Beach Lt. Mendez told the outlet. The flyers feature a drawing of a klansman standing in front of a burning cross with the words “white lives do matter.”

Residents in the area began gathering the flyers as they saw them in the community. Shaun Wallace saw his neighbor holding one of the flyers at around 7:30 a.m., appearing visibly upset. The two found 14 in the area where they were. “It’s really disheartening to see openly racist material in our neighborhood,” Wallace, who was walking his dog when he saw his neighbor, told the Register. “Almost everyone who lives in this area that I’ve shown this to feels the same way.”

Wallace said the racist behavior in his neighborhood is not new. Wallace shared that he has argued with people online who claim “white people” are afraid to “stand up for their heritage because they are afraid of being called a racist” and spew other racist rhetoric. He mentioned that his community is filled with racist people.

“We should own this as a community, not push this issue away,” Wallace told the newspaper.

Unarmed Homeless Black Man Shot And Killed In Orange County By Deputies From Sheriff’s Office Homeless Outreach Team

In an all too familiar scenario, two Orange County Sheriff’s Deputies have murdered a black, unarmed homeless man, and the entire incident was caught on film.

When deputies from the homeless outreach team arrived, a violent physical confrontation with Reinhold ensued, though it is unclear why. In the footage, Reinhold appears to push the deputies. One deputy can be heard saying, “He’s got my gun” before two shots are then fired.

Deputies began lifesaving measures to no avail. Reinhold was pronounced dead at the scene. Protests quickly ensued, calling for the officers in the killing to be arrested.

Jackson Hinkle, a past San Clemente City Council candidate, turned activist, took to Twitter to blast the officers involved.

“Clearly, these officers lacked the ability to effectively respond to the needs of this homeless man. The man was trying to walk away; they wouldn’t let him. The officers escalated the situation by body-slamming the man on the ground.”

The Sheriff’s Department claims that an additional surveillance video exists that supposedly shows Reinhold reaching for a deputy’s gun.

On Thursday, department spokeswoman Carrie Braun responded to demands to release the video, which is now part of an investigation that the Orange County District Attorney’s office.

“The decision to release that video is not solely up to OCSD due to the ongoing investigation at the DA’s office,” Braun said before adding. “We are very well aware of the national climate of police-community relations and are doing everything we can to provide honest and transparent information about what we know to be true about this incident but also be cautious to not provide information we don’t know to be true.”

The Department has since released photos of the incident.
