The family of the woman who was shot and killed during the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol is planning to file a wrongful death suit for $10 million.

According to Fox News, Ashli Babbitt’s family plans to file a lawsuit against the Capitol Police and the officer who fatally shot her.

The Babbitt family’s attorney Terry Roberts told Zenger News that they will seek at least $10 million and will serve the Capitol Police department within the next 10 days.

Babbitt was fatally shot as she broke through a doorway as part of a mob of rioters who were supporting then-President Donald Trump. The rioters were attempting to enter into a restricted area near the House floor that had been barricaded. 

“A rookie police officer would not have shot this woman,” Terry Roberts told the news outlet. “If she committed any crime by going through the window and into the Speaker’s Lobby, it would have been trespassing. Some misdemeanor crime. All a rookie cop would have done is arrest her.”

Authorities have not identified the officer who shot Babbitt, and the Justice Department has already announced that they will not be pursuing charges against that officer.

Another Black man has lost his life to a Minneapolis police officer.

On Sunday, 20-year-old Daunte Wright was shot and killed by police in a Minneapolis suburb during a traffic stop, triggering violent demonstrations that lasted into Monday’s early hours. Officers in riot gear clashed with protesters while the victim’s mother called for peace after her son was shot.

It’s the same metropolitan area currently on edge about the trial of the police officers charged in George Floyd’s death.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz tweeted he was praying for Wright’s family “as our state mourns another life of a Black man taken by law enforcement.”

Katie Wright, Daunte’s mother, tried to suppress any tension before the altercation between demonstrators and law enforcement in Brooklyn Center.

She said, “All the violence if it keeps going it’s only going to be about the violence. We need it to be about why my son got shot for no reason,” adding that, “We need to make sure it’s about him and not about smashing police cars because that’s not going to bring my son back.”

Protesters gathered near the scene waving banners and posters that read “Black Lives Matter,” but police did not immediately identify Wright. Others marched in silence with their hands raised, and  “Justice for Daunte Wright” was written in multicolored chalk in the street.

Officers intercepted a motorist just before 2 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement from Brooklyn Center police. Police attempted to apprehend the driver after discovering he had an outstanding warrant. Police say that the driver re-entered the car, and an officer shot at it, striking the driver. The vehicle traveled several miles before colliding with another vehicle.

Wright’s family’s version of the shooting varied, with Katie Wright claiming that he was shot before getting back into the car.

During an altercation with Minneapolis police in June, Wright was wanted for running from officers and carrying a gun without a permit, according to court records. A probable cause statement stated that police received a call about a man waving a gun, later identified as Wright.

Following a preliminary autopsy and family notification, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the person who died Sunday, according to police. During the collision, a female passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Brooklyn Center is a 30,000-person community on the northwest outskirts of Minneapolis.

The passenger, according to Katie Wright, was her son’s girlfriend. As he was being pulled over, Wright said her son called her.

She said, “All he did was have air fresheners in the car, and they told him to get out of the car.” During the call, she said she heard tussling and then someone saying, “Daunte, don’t run,” before the call ended. When she called back, her son’s girlfriend said he had been shot.

Shortly after the shooting and accident, demonstrators gathered, with some jumping into police vehicles and assaulting officers. At a news conference, Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said that marchers had descended on the Brooklyn Center police department building, throwing rocks and other officers’ items. By 1:15 a.m. Monday, he said, the demonstrators had mostly dispersed.

According to Harrington, at the city’s Shingle Creek shopping center, about 20 businesses had been broken into. Law enforcement officials were working together to quell the violence, and the National Guard had been called.

Mayor Mike Elliott of Brooklyn Center imposed a curfew in the area, which ended at 6 a.m. Monday. “We want to make sure everyone is safe,” he said in a tweet. “Please stay safe, and please go home.”

According to police, officers in Brooklyn Center wear body cameras and claim dash cameras were triggered during the incident. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been ordered to investigate.

Derek Chauvin’s trial, in which he was convicted in Floyd’s death as a former Minneapolis cop, was set to resume on Monday. Floyd, a Black man, died after Chauvin pushed his knee against Floyd’s neck.  Floyd was allegedly pinned for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, according to prosecutors.

In addition to the staff already in place for Chauvin’s trial at the Hennepin County courthouse in Minneapolis, Harrington said more National Guard members and state law enforcement personnel would be deployed throughout the Twin Cities and in Brooklyn Center.

Outside the courthouse, which was reinforced ahead of Chauvin’s trial with tall fencing topped with barbed wire, coils of razor wire between the fences, and concrete barriers, there was no noticeable improvement in the already high-security presence on Monday morning. Sheriff’s deputies and county security officers, as well as National Guard troops in military vehicles, remained on the lookout.

Brooklyn Center Community Schools Superintendent Carly Baker said in a statement since school buildings will be closed on Monday, all Brooklyn Center students will be taught online.

“We are focused on taking steps at the moment. I haven’t entirely processed the tragedy that took place in our community, and I’m prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of our students, families, staff members, and community members, ” Baker said.  “We know our community experienced trauma, and we need the time and space to process.”

Last week’s U.S. capitol riot may not be the last of the riots. Authorities in Atlanta and others across the country are preparing for the possibility of more unrest ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, one Georgia-based militia told the outlet that it would protest at the state Capitol on Sunday morning.

The FBI has previously warned of more armed protests to occur at all 50 state capitals across the nation and Washington, D.C.

Officials say other protests might materialize or spill out into the downtown Atlanta and Midtown area.

A website’s social media posts monitored by AJC promotes the national, 50 state protests, saying they will be peaceful but does encourage protesters to come armed.

“This is the time to shatter the fear narrative spread by the mainstream (sic) media and unite against those who wish to take our rights away,” one post read. “If you can carry legally, you should carry. If you wish to be unarmed, come unarmed.”

Governor Brian Kemp ordered that the Capitol Police, State Patrol, and Georgia Guard amp up its security on the state Capitol grounds. Kemp has also declared that he will not tolerate the violations of laws seen at last week’s siege.

Extremist groups are at odds over last week’s riot and moving forward. While some have issued a call to action, others have praised and defended last week’s madness. Some urge their comrades to stay at home through the inauguration while again spinning new conspiracy theories in the process, the outlet reports.

“This is a demoncratic (sic) ploy to make us look bad and have an excuse to fire on us, make Trump look like he is doing a coup, and start a civil war as a diversion and a reason to call in the UN,” one commenter wrote on a message board popular with far-right paramilitary groups. “NOBODY GO. Stay home!”

So far, 200 suspects from last week’s siege have been identified, and over 100 have been arrested, FBI Director Christopher Wray said alongside VP Mike Pence.

“We know who you are, if you are out there, and FBI agents are coming to find you,” he said and warned those who might be plotting violence on Inauguration Day to stay home.

“Look at what is happening now to the people who were involved in the Capitol siege, wherever they scattered to,” he said. “We have FBI agents tracking them down and arresting them.”

Georgia authorities aren’t taking any chances and have employed officers in military-style uniforms to patrol the Capitol grounds. The Atlanta police department has suspended leave and added 12-hour shifts to prepare, and Gov. Kemp extended his executive order authorizing the deployment of the Georgia National Guard.

“I want to assure everyone from legislators, staff, visitors and the general public on down that the Department of Public Safety, the Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia National Guard take the safety and security of the Capitol and the people here very seriously,” said Kemp, who also called the deadly violence at the U.S. Capitol “disgraceful” and “unamerican.”

Kemp assured the public that Georgia’s law enforcement agencies are “fully prepared to deal with anything and everything that may happen in the days and weeks ahead.”

Atlanta police backed that statement, saying they are prepared to respond quickly in cases of trouble.

“The City of Atlanta Police Department continues to coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to respond, should protests or illegal activity occur,” Atlanta police spokesman Steve Avery said.

The FBI is also on the side of state and local law enforcement agencies, lending them its support.

“Our efforts are focused on identifying, investigating, and disrupting individuals that are inciting violence and engaging in criminal activity,” FBI spokesman Kevin Rowson said. “As we do in the normal course of business, we are gathering information to identify any potential threats and are sharing that information with our partners.”

“Our focus is not on peaceful protesters,” he added, “but on those threatening their safety and the safety of other citizens with violence and destruction of property.”

A Colorado man who threatened to kill House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week drove all the way to Washington, D.C., with the intent to take part in the riot at the U.S. Capitol, came armed with an assault rifle, handgun, and 2,500 rounds of ammunition.

According to The Denver Post, Cleveland Grover Meredith Jr. was charged with making the threat and illegally possessing a gun and ammunition last week.

A federal criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia claims that he made the threats but missed the opportunity to participate in the riot because he had to stop for car repairs during the cross country drive.

Meredith arrived in D.C. too late on Jan. 6 and revealed in a text message the next day that he wanted to “put a bullet in (Pelosi’s) noggin,” among a variety of other threats, the complaint detailed.

Meredith’s stockpile of ammunition included at least 320 “armor-piercing” rounds. Meredith reportedly listed his residence as a Colorado address, but the Atlanta Journal-Constitution claims he lived in Georgia and was flagged in that state back in 2018 after erecting a billboard to support the QAnon conspiracy theory.

Before the Pro-Trump supporter’s violent attack on the U.S. Capitol, a political consultant warned about what was to come; however, proper authorities did not listen.

On December 21, more than two weeks before the attack, Arieh Kovler tweeted, “On January 6, armed Trumpist militias will be rallying in DC, at Trump’s orders.”

“It’s highly likely that they’ll try to storm the Capitol after it certifies Joe Biden’s win. I don’t think this has sunk in yet.”

Since 2015, Kovler has studied extremist Trump message boards, GQ mentions.

During an interview, GQ asked Kovler about what led to his prediction, which resulted in being what happened on Jan.6.

“We first encountered Trumpism bubbling up through the Chans—4Chan, 8Chan, 2Chan—and Reddit,” he replied. “In around 2015, it emerged into an essentially performative act.”

Kovler mentioned that Trump supporters initially supported him because they thought he was funny, but eventually, they convinced themselves to believe their joke. Once he became a nominee for the Republican party, his following became widespread.

“You can see that, basically, the day Trump put out his call saying “big rally in Washington on the 6th,” the die was cast,” Kovler stated. ”

“I’m sure that there were going to be people coming on the 6th anyway, but once Trump said “be there,” they interpreted that as a call to action, as their marching orders. Trump supporters thought they would come and would be called on to do something.”

By the beginning of 2021, Kovler knew something terrible was ensuing.

“You could see the discussion become less abstract. By last week, these people were sharing maps of DC. They were talking about having enough of them that they would be able to erect basically their own cadre around the entire area of Congress.”

“They had a map of the tunnels [in the basement of the Capitol], and they were talking about how they’re going to be able to stop Congress from leaving. They imagined that this was the day there were going to be mass executions of Congressmen.”

The magazine then asked Kovler thoughts on why the execution of members of Congress didn’t happen.

“A lot of these people were there for the ride. I think that had things gotten more violent, there would have been a lot of people who would be very willing to go along with it. I think that ultimately the police successfully kept elected officials out of the hands of these people.”

When asked if he believes Trump’s followers will attempt another attack in the coming weeks, he replied, “I don’t think so.”

“First, the inauguration is done with the Secret Service and the FBI. It’s a different ballgame. I think the next couple of days, statehouses need to watch out. That’s where I would be looking at. I don’t think there’s going to be another thing in DC.”

Snapchat blocked President Donald Trump’s account after chaos erupted on Capitol Hill. The President has been banned on other social media sites for provoking violence. His account will be locked until Snapchat decides to lift it.

“We can confirm that earlier today we locked President Trump’s Snapchat account,” Rachel Racusen, Snapchat spokesperson.

The social media company said they banned President Trump’s account before he posted a video on the site, saying that it “contributed to rather than diminished the risk of ongoing violence.”

“We simply cannot promote accounts in America that are linked to people who incite racial violence, whether they do so on or off our platform,” Evan Spiegel, Snapchat CEO, said.

The woman who was reportedly shot Wednesday afternoon during the riots on the U.S Capitol has died from her injuries.

It is not clear who shot the unidentified woman inside the Capitol. In a video captured by a bystander during the chaos, the woman is seen with a crowd inside the breached government building. A gunshot can be heard in the video, though it is unclear where the lethal shot came from. The woman, who is wearing a Donald Trump banner around her neck, is then seen being lowered onto the ground by others present. She is later seen being placed inside of an ambulance with blood visible around her upper body.

Dustin Sternbeck, a spokesman for the D.C. police, confirmed the woman’s death. No other details surrounding the shooting have been released at this time.
