When it comes to politics, it’s not often that we get to see black women in the forefront. But in today’s world, black women are showing out more than ever in the fight for equality.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀
From speaking out on racial injustices, police brutality, workplace discrimination, and more, black women are consistently showing why they are the true leaders of the pack.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Here are five powerful, black women you should know in politics:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Angela Rye-With grace and just enough sass, Angela Rye has become a force to be reckoned with in the political sphere. When it comes to keeping it real, she is the lady for the job. From laughing at Omarosa’s demise to clocking other commentators on their “alternative facts,” Rye is for sure one of today’s leading voices in politics.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Maxine Waters-Since the 1970s, Congresswoman Maxine Waters has consistently been a voice for the voiceless. She has based her career on helping those in need, never shying away from her opponents. With poise, Waters is always direct and is never afraid to “reclaim her time”.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Symone Sanders-At only 28-years-old, Symone Sanders is the perfect example of why millennials should become involved in politics. As the former National Press secretary for Bernie Sanders and now a Democratic strategist and political commentator for CNN, Sanders is always encouraging people of color, especially millennials, to be the change they want to see in the world. She is unapologetically opinionated and most definitely, ahead of her time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Keisha Lance Bottoms-As the second female mayor of Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms is a leading lady in politics who is consistently fighting for change. Since taking office in December, Bottoms is already doing great work by partnering with other mayors and CEOs across the nation to combat homelessness in our country and to encourage upward mobility for U.S. Citizens.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Aja Brown-Compton mayor Aja Brown is another leading lady in politics. Since taking office, Brown has made a huge impact on her community and others. From her assistance with first time home buyers to improving the peace between gang leaders of the Bloods and Crips, Brown is a true leader in her community and now she’s taking her efforts to new levels by running for Congress.
