Thanks to Trump’s new border control policy, stories of in-humane type facilities that separate families of migrants are getting worse and worse. ⠀⠀
Now, AP reports that at least three “tender age” detention centers in South Texas are carrying infant and toddler-aged children who have been forced away from their parents. The report acknowledged medical professionals and lawyers who described the facilities as “playrooms of crying preschool-age children in crisis.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“The thought that they are going to be putting such little kids in an institutional setting? I mean it is hard for me to even wrap my mind around it,” Kay Bellor, vice president for programs at Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, told the AP. “Toddlers are being detained.”
According to MSNBC correspondent, Jacob Soboroff, during a tour of one of the facilities, he saw loads of babies “alone in cages.”
The AP’s report states that professionals do not perceive the shelters as the basis of the problem, but the idea of removing kids as young as infants from the care of their parents can cause traumatic fear and anxiety. Others who have visited the centers describe the institution style facilities as an issue in itself.
The government reportedly plans to open a fourth center in Houston, in a warehouse that was previously used to house Hurricane Harvey victims. City officials, including Mayor Sylvester Turner, are publicly denouncing the move.
“There comes a point in time we draw a line, and for me, the line is with these children,” Turner said during a news conference Tuesday.
Ultimately, the move to capture and separate migrating families has increased the amount of government funding needed to care for immigrants, who are usually not able to receive government assistance at all. Which ironically goes against the very reason many Americans disprove immigration in the first place.
